Date: June 2, 2023

Rupshaina Khatung, an 18-year-old girl with physical disabilities, resides in a small village situated in the low-lying area near the riverbank of Kamala River, within Kalyanpur Municipality. Her physical limitations prevent her from engaging in physical labor, leaving her family struggling to make ends meet. Rupshaina's father, who is visually impaired at the age of 67, faces similar challenges, lacking a disability identity card and viable livelihood options.

Recently, Rupshaina expressed her keen interest in acquiring sewing skills, recognizing the potential it holds as a source of livelihood. However, financial constraints hinder her from pursuing the necessary training. Beyond her aspirations for economic empowerment, Rupshaina harbors concerns about the safety of her family and the entire community. She is unaware of disaster risk reduction measures, and the absence of designated safer places or evacuation centers in the village poses a significant threat during floods in the Kamala River.

In response to these challenges, the project team has taken initiative to connect with the municipality to secure disability identity cards and avail other essential services for individuals like Rupshaina and her father. Simultaneously, they are exploring avenues to provide Rupshaina with the resources and support needed to pursue her passion for sewing, ultimately fostering her self-reliance.

Furthermore, the project team recognizes the urgency of enhancing community awareness regarding disaster risk reduction. They are actively collaborating with the village residents to identify safer locations for evacuation during natural disasters. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish a sustainable mechanism for emergency response within the village, ensuring the safety and well-being of all community members.

Rupshaina's journey exemplifies the transformative power of support and empowerment. Through the project team's dedication and intervention, Rupshaina and her father have the opportunity to access essential services, livelihood prospects, and a heightened sense of safety. Their story underscores the significance of inclusive development, where individuals with disabilities are equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to overcome challenges and lead fulfilling lives. Rupshaina's journey is a testament to the positive impact that collective efforts can have on transforming lives and communities.
